The coolest pieces of clothing all have to start somewhere. And by somewhere, we mean the BCBGeneration headquarters. We chatted with one of our designers, Katie Marroquin, to give you a little insight on what it means to be a designer.
Q – How did you end up at BCBGeneration? Take us through your journey.
A – I came to LA straight out of high school — attending FIDM and pursuing a degree in design and I’ve been working in this industry since 2011. Before BCBGeneration, I was working for a small company where I was able to learn a lot. With the hands-on knowledge I gained from my first job, I was able to catapult into landing a job on Team GEN!
Q – How would you describe your personal style?
A – My style is a mix of things. Sometimes I like the feel of dark bohemian, other times I lean towards feminine and romantic, but there are days when I am drawn to a minimalist look. I lead a very active life, so my outfits definitely strike a balance between casual and sophisticated. I’m a huge fan of neutrals and always fall back on my closet staples: great jeans, easy basics, a black moto jacket for layering, and naturally an extensive collection of shoes.
Q – What’s your typical day like?
A – BUSY! I kickstart my morning with a little caffeine before heading into work. From there, I have my hands on every aspect of the design process. This can include anything from gathering inspiration, to sketching, to consulting with our pattern makers, to fit sessions, to sending things out to be sewn, cut, yielded — the whole nine yards! It’s a lot of work, but incredibly rewarding when you see the final results. The premiere of a new collection each season is always exciting.
Q – Design-wise, what stands out to you when you see a piece of clothing?
A – At first glance, it’s definitely any interesting details. This can include embroidery, cut-outs, beading, texture, or just anything that will make a garment stand out.
Q – Who’s your fashion icon?
A – I’ve always been a big fan of the Olsen twins. I love how Ashley is always so chic and put-together while Mary-Kate adds edginess to her boho style. Millennials tend to look toward off-duty models and bloggers for style inspiration and I’m not different. My favorite is Julie Sarinana of Sincerely Jules. She’s got such a cool look!
Q – What’s one trend you’re digging this season?
A – The gaucho/culotte trend. They can be dressed up with a great pair of heels or dressed down to look effortlessly cool. Versatility is key.
Q – Favorite piece from the current collection?
A – Obsessed with the deep v-neck culotte jumpsuit. Of course.
Q – What you can’t leave your house without?
A – My phone, lip balm, and candy. Always candy.
Q – Best part about your job?
A – Our amazing team! As stressful and demanding as the fashion world can be, we always manage to keep things fun!
