Carissa Alvarado of Us the Duo chatted with us about her music, her style, and meeting Oprah.
Q – How would you describe your personal style? Does it relate to your music?
A – I would say that my style is a mix of classy and edgy. For instance, I might pair a high-waisted pencil skirt and crop top with boots and a leather jacket. I also enjoy being comfortable, so I’ll often wear boyfriend jeans and a tee or a jumpsuit (which I am super into right now because it’s easy to just throw on when I’m in a rush or don’t know what to wear!) We are currently transitioning over to a new sound with our music, so I think my personal style will better suit the new tunes to come. I’m excited!
Q – How do you dress for the stage versus how do you dress on a regular day?
A – My stage to everyday dress is actually pretty similar. On stage, I’d wear a cute dress or two-piece outfit with booties or heels. I’d totally rock those outfits on a normal day too!
Q – Who are some of your fashion influences?
Q – You are one half of Us the Duo — alongside your husband. How did you end up together?
A – I met my husband Michael randomly at a music video shoot in LA. I was an extra on set and he was visiting from North Carolina with a friend. We spoke and laughed for a few hours and the rest was history! We did the long distance thing for a while until he decided to move to Cali. Shortly after, he proposed and we got married a year later. It happened so quickly and effortlessly, so people aren’t lying when they said “when you know, you know.” It wasn’t until after we fell in love and got married that we became a duo and made music our career. I’m glad it worked out in that order.
Q – What’s your dream artist collaboration?
A – There are so many incredible artists that I’d love to collaborate with, but one that I would love to work with at the moment would be Zedd. He’s an insane producer and I feel like we could create something really cool together.
Q – What advice do you have for those trying to break into the music industry?
A – Follow your heart creatively and do what you love. Stay consistent and keep up with social media and the rest will follow. Whether you get signed or not does not define if you’ve “made it.” Never stop creating and you’ll end up where you’re meant to be.
Q – Favorite song?
A – My favorite song is changes with my mood, but I am currently obsessed with a band called Wet. Their song “Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl” is my jam.
Q – Funniest thing that happened when you were recording?
A – One thing that always happens (and that I get made fun of for!) is that I get carried away with my arms. When I’m in my zone and singing in the booth, I often wave my arms around as I feel the music. One time the room wasn’t as dark as I thought it was. Everyone who saw me thought I was doing some sort of interpretive dance and laughed. I didn’t even realize I was moving around so much!
Q – You met Oprah. Tell us what that was like.
A – Meeting Oprah was definitely a huge moment for me in my career because, I mean come on…OPRAH. We had the opportunity to join her on her motivational tour where we got to sing a few songs at every stop. On the first day, while we were playing, the crowd started screaming like crazy. At first I thought, “Wow, I guess they really like our music. Cool!” But I turned around only to find that Oprah had walked on stage and surprised us! My jaw dropped to the floor as she hugged us and said “You guys sound great.” She is SO sweet and inspiring! Not gonna lie, I definitely fangirled. And in the press photo, my jaw is literally on the ground; it’s kind of embarrassing.
Q – What’s next for you?
A – We are currently working on new music and are experimenting with sounds that are different from anything we’ve done before. It’s a really fun and exciting time for us and I can’t wait for everyone to hear the new tunes!
